Dr. Serena Horlick is proud to offer professional microneedling treatments. Using cutting-edge technology and her extensive knowledge base, Dr Horlick will ensure that you achieve your skincare goals in a safe and effective way. Microneedling is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure that can help to improve your skin quality and texture, whilst reversing the signs of ageing and improving the appearance of hyperpigmentation and acne scarring.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling skin rejuvenating treatment is a form of collagen induction therapy. A medical-grade, electronic device is used to create tiny micropunctures in your skin using very fine needles. The injuries that microneedling creates are not harmful, rather, they are beneficial because they stimulate a safe, low-grade inflammatory response, that results in the skin producing collagen and elastin. These tiny puncture wounds facilitate the infiltration of active ingredients into the deep layers of the skin, maximising the results of the treatment. Dr Horlick will apply serums targeted at achieving your treatment goals by acting synergistically with the microneedling process. The overall result will be brighter, smoother, and tighter skin with reductions in hyperpigmentation and acne scarring if present.
Benefits of Microneedling skin rejuvenating treatment
Microneeding is effective at treating a variety of the most common skin complaints. It can be used to improve:
Acne scarring
Skin elasticity
Uneven skin tone
Wrinkles and fine lines
Hair thickness
Hyperpigmentation
Enlarged pores
Microneedling can also be used as a treatment for hair loss, both male-pattern baldness and hair loss caused by the autoimmune disease, alopecia areata. By stimulating the production of collagen in the scalp, microneedling has been shown to regenerate the health of hair follicles. In male-pattern baldness, the best candidates are those in the early stages, who are experiencing thinning but still have some hair follicles remaining. If you are suffering from hair loss, book a consultation with Dr. Horlick to discuss whether microneedling may be a beneficial treatment for you.
What to Expect During a Microneedling Treatment
Before beginning any treatment, you’ll undergo a skin consultation with Dr. Horlick, who will assess your individual needs and suitability for microneedling. This consultation will include discussing your past medical history and your skincare goals. The initial consultation is key to devising a bespoke treatment plan to maximise the benefits for your skin.
Every microneedling treatment begins by numbing the treatment area using a local anaesthetic numbing agent to minimize discomfort during treatment. After the numbing agent has taken effect, usually 5-10 minutes after application, Dr. Horlick will perform your microneedling treatment using a serum that will help you to achieve your goals. For example, hyaluronic acid serums are used to help improve hydration, whereas hair serums are selected if you are using microneedling for hair loss. During the treatment, you should not feel any discomfort due to the effects of the numbing cream.
To complete your microneedling treatment, Dr. Horlick will apply a hydrating mask to nourish and refresh your skin post-treatment, accompanied by a 15-minute LED light treatment to maximise the results, soothe the skin and accelerate the healing process.
Contraindications to Microneedling
Microneedling treatments are an excellent choice for many patients, however, microneedling is not advised in the presence of certain conditions. Microneedling is not appropriate for the treatment of keloid scars, which may become more prominent following the treatment, and those with a personal or family history of keloid scarring may also be discouraged from having the treatment. Patients with a history of bleeding disorders may also be advised against microneedling. If you are not deemed a candidate for microneedling, Dr. Horlick will recommend a variety of other safe and effective treatments that can help you achieve rejuvenated skin.
Results of Microneedling Treatment
Microneedling can leave you feeling more confident, with tighter, clearer, and more vibrant skin. Results can be seen 4-6 weeks after the treatment. To achieve the best results, we recommend an initial course of three to four microneedling treatments that are spaced at least three weeks apart. Bi-annual maintenance treatments are then recommended. The number of treatments will vary according to your skin concern, something that will be discussed at the initial consultation.
Alternatives to Microneedling
Many people wonder if they should opt for at-home dermal rollers instead of going for professional microneedling treatments. While the low price point of at-home dermal rollers seems appealing, these home rollers can be dangerous. Due to the inferior quality of materials used to engineer the needles used in these devices, their use can create the wrong type of inflammation for your skin, potentially resulting in paradoxical scarring. Furthermore, manual, at-home dermal rollers are significantly less powerful, resulting in inferior results and inability to treat conditions such as acne scarring.
Other alternatives to microneedling include topical skincare and injectable treatments, for example skin boosters, such as Profhilo and polynucleotides. In many cases, multiple, synergistic, treatments are recommended to achieve the best results. Dr Horlick will discuss her recommendations in the initial consultation.

Microneedling Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How should I care for my skin after a microneedling treatment?
Aftercare is important to help you maintain superior results after your microneedling treatment. Directly after your treatment, it is normal to experience some mild redness. This typically resolves within a few days after your treatment. Be sure to protect your skin with a daily sunscreen, of at least SPF 30. You should also avoid intense exercise, hot showers or baths in the first 24 hours after your treatment.
How long does a microneedling treatment take?
Microneedling treatments are quick and easy, making them easy to do even for patients with busy schedules. The actual microneedling process takes only around 5 minutes, but your initial appointment will last for about one hour, to allow adequate time for a skin consultation, numbing the area and the post-treatment hydrating mask and LED light therapy. Follow-up appointments will take around 30 minutes.
