What is the masseter muscle?
The masseter muscle is one of the main chewing muscles of the face. It overlies the angle of the jaw. In some people it is very established, and contraction of the masseter muscle during sleep leads to tooth grinding and TMJ dysfunction.

Some people do not grind their teeth but have very established masseter muscles, which make the face look square and masculine.

Anti-wrinkle injections (botulinum toxin A) can be used to weaken the masseter muscle, reducing tooth grinding, improving TMJ dysfunction and also slimming the jawline.

How do anti-wrinkle injections work?
Botulinum toxin A is the active substance in anti-wrinkle injections. This naturally occurring compound works by temporarily blocking the signals that tell the muscles to contract. The muscle therefore relaxes. When muscles stop contracting, they shrink in size. The smaller muscle is weaker and unable to contract so hard, so tooth grinding is reduced.

The treatment is injected locally, making it extremely safe. The effects last around 3-4 months but can last longer with repeat administration. A top-up may be required.

The process
Before treatment
At your consultation, goals will be discussed and your face assessed. Dr Horlick will recommend a treatment plan based on this. Consent form will be completed and before photos taken. You will now be ready for your treatment.
During treatment
Your face will be cleaned, injection points marked and then the product will be injected. The marks will be cleaned off and your treatment will be completed. The masseter is injected in 4 points on each side of the face.
After treatment
You will be advised of the aftercare instructions and provided with a leaflet detailing them. A top-up appointment will be booked if necessary. A top-up may be required at your first appointment, but will not be required at subsequent appointments.
Results
You can expect to see your results at 5-7 days, with maximum effect seen at 14 days. Results last 3-4 months, although can be longer after repeated treatments.
